Why You’ll Love this

Cozy Flavors: The warm spiced apples combined with a buttery crunchy topping make this dessert a fall classic comfort food

Versatile: You can easily adjust the sweetness or add different spices to suit your taste

Ingredients

Apples: I like to use a mix of the best-looking apples at the store. My favorites this season are Honeycrisp, Fuji and Gala.

Brown Sugar: I have tried this recipe with both types of brown sugar, dark brown and light brown. The dark brown gave the crumble a molasses-y flavor that paired nicely with the fall flavors. The light brown was more mellow but still very rich and rounded the dessert out nicely.

Spices: Cinnamon, Cardamom, Salt. The cardamom adds a subtle floral spice that elevates the classic apple. The cinnamon is a classic apple crumble flavor. The salt enhances the flavor of the crumble and brings it all together,

How To Make

Prep: Preheat the oven to 350 and butter a 13×9 baking dish.

Prepare Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine apples, ½ cup brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Set it aside.

Prepare Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, pecans, and salt. Mix in the melted butter, using your hands as needed to get every oat coated in butter.

Put it all together: Evenly layer the apples into the baking dish. Using your hands, create clumps of the crumble of varying sizes and sprinkle evenly across the apples.

Bake: Bake in the oven for 50-60 minutes. The apples will be soft, tender and bubbling, and the crumble will be a golden brown. Let cool slightly before enjoying with a scoop of vanilla ice ceam!

Tips for Success

  1. Mix the topping for the crumble well, making sure every oat is coated. I use my hands to get the best mixture possible. If the oats are not coated, the crumble will be dry as opposed to golden brown and crisp.
  2. For the pecans, you’ll want to roughly chop so that they are varying sizes. The difference sizes adds to the crumbles texture and taste. In one of my tests, I tried using small chopped pecans and it resulted in them getting lost in the topping. Having a few larger chunks throughout makes this dish shine!
  3. Notes on Sweetness: The natural sweetness of apples reduces the need for added sugar in this recipe, but feel free to add an extra 1/4 cup in either the filling or topping if you prefer a sweeter flavor!
