Description
This cardamom Apple Crumble is everything you want in a cozy fall dessert—warm, fragrant, and incredibly satisfying. The secret ingredient in my apple crumble is cardamom, which adds a subtle floral spice that elevates the classic apple crumble to something truly special.
Ingredients
Spiced Apple Filling
8 medium apples, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch thick chunks
1/4– 1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Cardamom
2 tbsp Lemon juice
Topping
1 Cup Flour
1 cup Rolled Oats
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
1 cup pecans, roughly chopped
1/2 tsp salt
¼ tsp cinnamon
⅛ tsp cardamom
12 tbsp Butter, Melted
Instructions
Prep: Preheat the oven to 350 and butter a 13×9 baking dish.
Prepare Spiced Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and lemon juice. Set it aside.
Prepare Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, pecans, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. Mix in the melted butter, using your hands as needed to get every oat coated in butter.
Put it all together: Evenly layer the apples into the baking dish. Using your hands, create clumps of the crumble of varying sizes and sprinkle evenly across the apples.
Bake: Bake in the oven for 50-60 minutes. The apples will be soft, tender and bubbling, and the crumble will be a golden brown. Let cool slightly for enjoying with a scoop of vanilla ice ceam!
Notes
Notes on sweetness: The natural sweetness of apples reduces the need for added sugar in this recipe, but feel free to add an extra 1/4 cup if you prefer a sweeter flavor!
Sugar: I have tried using both types of brown sugar: dark brown and light brown. Using dark brown gives a deeper molasses-y taste that pairs very nicely with the fall flavors, while the lighter is much more mellow yet rich. They are both equally delicious!
