A seriously good fall latte made with real orange, honey, cinnamon, and cardamom. No flavored syrups needed! This homemade latte is creamy, fragrant, and full of flavor, with a simple trick that makes all the difference.

I love a good fall latte, but sometimes I want something other than pumpkin spice. Something with warm spices, a little sweetness, and plenty of flavor without reaching for a bottle of flavored syrup.
When I lived in Seattle, I used to get this incredible coffee that had fresh orange peel in it. It was such a simple addition, but the flavor was amazing. I’ve been thinking about that coffee for years and finally decided to try recreating something similar at home.
After a little experimenting, I landed on this Orange Honey Cardamom Latte, and it is SO good.
The secret? Letting fresh orange peel steep directly in hot espresso for two minutes.
I initially tried adding orange zest, but the flavor barely came through. Steeping the peel made all the difference! Add a little honey, cardamom, cinnamon, and steamed milk, and you’ve got a seriously flavorful latte made with real ingredients.

Why You’ll Love This Orange Honey Cardamom Latte
- Real ingredients, big flavor. Fresh orange, honey, and warm spices create a delicious latte without flavored syrups.
- Ready in about 5 minutes. It tastes like something you’d order at a specialty coffee shop but is surprisingly easy to make at home.
- Perfect for fall. Cardamom and cinnamon add warmth, while orange brings a little brightness.
- Easy to customize. Make it sweeter, switch up the milk, or adjust the spices to your liking.
- A fun alternative to pumpkin spice. All the fall flavor, just a little different!
Ingredients You’ll Need
You don’t need anything fancy to make this latte, just a handful of real ingredients.
Espresso: A freshly brewed shot of espresso creates the rich coffee base. I use my espresso machine, but you can also use strongly brewed coffee.
Milk: Whole milk makes a rich and creamy latte, but oat milk works beautifully with the spices, too.
Honey: Adds just the right amount of sweetness and complements the orange and cardamom.
Cardamom: This is the star spice! It has a fragrant, slightly citrusy flavor that pairs perfectly with coffee.
Cinnamon: A little cinnamon adds warmth and gives the latte a fuller, more rounded flavor.
Fresh orange: We’re using the peel, not the juice! The aromatic oils in the orange peel give this latte its signature citrus flavor.
How to Make an Orange Honey Cardamom Latte
Step 1: Prepare the Orange Peel
Using a vegetable peeler, remove a strip of peel approximately 2 inches long from a fresh orange. Try to avoid the white pith, which can taste bitter.
Rub the orange peel around the rim of your coffee mug to release its fragrant oils, then drop it into the mug.
Step 2: Infuse the Espresso
Brew one shot of hot espresso directly over the orange peel. Here is the espresso machine that I use, and also my favorite kitchen appliance!
Let it steep for two minutes, then remove the peel.
This is the step that makes the recipe! The hot espresso draws out the aromatic oils from the orange peel, giving the coffee a noticeable citrus flavor.
Step 3: Add the Honey and Spices
Add the honey, cinnamon, and cardamom directly to the espresso.
Stir until the honey dissolves and everything is well combined.
Step 4: Steam the Milk
Steam your milk until hot and creamy, with a little foam on top.
If you don’t have an espresso machine, heat the milk in a saucepan or microwave and use a handheld frother.
Step 5: Finish Your Latte
Slowly pour the steamed milk over the flavored espresso.
Finish with a light sprinkle of cinnamon and cardamom.
Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Homemade Fall Latte
Don’t skip the orange peel steep.
I tested this recipe with grated orange zest first, and the orange flavor just wasn’t strong enough. Steeping a strip of fresh peel directly in hot espresso for two minutes gave me exactly the flavor I was looking for.
Use fresh orange peel.
The oils in fresh orange peel are what make this latte so fragrant. Use a vegetable peeler to get a nice strip without too much bitter white pith.
Start with a little honey.
I recommend starting with one teaspoon and adjusting to taste. Honey adds sweetness without covering up the cardamom and orange.
Let the cardamom shine.
Cardamom has a wonderful aromatic flavor that makes this latte special. Cinnamon adds warmth, but you don’t want it to overpower the other ingredients.
Finish with a sprinkle of spices.
A little extra cinnamon and cardamom on top makes the latte smell amazing before you even take a sip.
Can I Make This Latte Iced?
Absolutely! The trick is to prepare the espresso and orange peel exactly the same way.
Steep the peel in the hot espresso for two minutes, remove it, and stir in the honey and spices while the coffee is still warm.
Let the espresso cool slightly, then pour it over ice and add cold milk.
The orange flavor comes from steeping the peel in hot espresso, so don’t skip that step even when making an iced version.
Can I Make This Without an Espresso Machine?
Yes! While espresso gives this latte a rich coffee flavor, you can use approximately ¼ cup of strongly brewed coffee instead.
Just make sure your coffee is hot when you add the orange peel so the citrus oils can infuse properly.
